Finished project

While decorating for fall this time I wanted something different for my dining room table, I love this table! It is not used except for holiday meals so I can dress it out knowing I won't have to move things off of it to make room for meals. Hubby built it for me several years ago, it is 9ft long so I have lots of room to play.

Well this year I saw my inspiration on pintrest and knew I had to have this box! So with picture in hand hubby and I started making plans...it was a one day project and easy to do and I just had to share it with you...here's what we did:

I decided I wanted my box 6 1/2 feet long and rustic, so we got three cedar plank fence boards at Home Depot. It is rough on the outside and three boards are plenty to do the sides bottom and ends, cost....$12.00!  After cutting to length I had hubby put an angle (35 degree) on the sides and bottom but you could make just a box and it will work fine.

add the end pieces and choose your stain, we used pecan because the board soaks it up and appears darker than most.

Mike sprayed mine because to him that is easier but a brush works just as well, no need to wipe it off just let it dry...

Now the fun part...DECORATE!! I used a garland for my base then filled in around it but you could use anything you like. I would suggest that you have something that you can use to "lift"  your items so they will be varying heights to add more interest...so here is my finished project..what do you think? Did we pull it off? (see why I love pintrest...there are so many wonderful ideas that you can make your own) I can hardly wait to use it for other seasons, won't it be cute with Christmas greenery and Santas or what about tulips and Easter eggs...oh the possibilities!!!

Keep creating and see you soon!

Labor Day weekend steeped in tradition

Labor Day weekend has always been a special time in my life. Growing up my Dad and all my guy cousins, uncles etc always went hunting on "opening day" which is the first day of September and Labor Day weekend.

My parents worked in the school system and we didn't start school until after Labor Day so mother and I were always at home while the hunters were off doing their thing....and with September in West Texas came fall weather, football, school, new clothes and DECORATING the house for the season. My mom was a big decorator and this was one of her favorite times to "fluff" for in fact her very favorite holiday I found out years later was Halloween!

I have carried on this tradition throughout my married life too probably because I married a West Texas boy who is a hunter!! and from there grew up a South Texas son who is an even bigger hunter...so as the men waved good bye this weekend to go hunting and bonding and out doing each other I decorated my house!

I got most of it done (why is it that you always feel that there is one more box somewhere??) I have not dressed my dining room table yet because I have a project for hubby when he gets back and I will share it with you too, but until then here is what I got done this afternoon...would love to see pictures of your decorating...will you share with us on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/HomespunCottage1  we would love to see what you have created. You will recognize lots of my things from what we carried in the shop I love playing and getting them out and this year was bitter sweet for sure.

Here is the mantle in the game room, kitchen table and a pie safe in the entry way through the back door...I love my canfolk doll and  hand made sunflowers!

This is another arrangement that I love, I have had these pilgrims since I bought the store in 2000! Hubby things they are so sad looking.. to me they are just perfect prim!! And don't forget your porch and outside, these jacks welcome our family and guest with a smile!

Check back later in the week to see if hubby and I get my "project" done for the dining room table, you mights just want to tackle one too!!

WOW August 31st where has the time gone?

Can you believe it the summer is almost over and fall is just around the corner! What have you done with your summer? Here is a snap shot of what we have done:
We met all the kids at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort in San Antonio for a short weekend. If you have never been I highly recommend it! The lazy river is a wonderful relaxing time and the whole area is geared around kids and family. We had movie night, smores , games, bike riding and a great kid friendly buffet. We will definitely go back sometime.

Our next big adventure was meeting friends for a day at Schlitterbaun and then spending the night in San Antonio and enjoying the River walk. I have to admit I have lived in Austin 35+ years and had never seen the riverwalk!! I am living large now that we have extra time, don't you think??
But I will have to admit the largest and most time consuming project of  the summer was a new pool in the back yard! and we LOVE it!! We have enjoyed going the the Y so much this year and the pool is one of Mike's favorite things, me not so much...I didn't like the dressing, undressing, carrying wet clothes home etc...so we just decided to bring the pool experience home and it was one of the best things we have done for ourselves so far!! We did an above the ground version not only because of price difference but for the ease, then we tackled the deck. We spent three weeks in the 100+ degree weather building our dream deck including not only a place to eat but a special deck for a slide!! Mike made these planters and tables for me:
Aren't they cute?? For the planters we took a log that was hollow, made a bottom for it to help keep the dirt from washing out, filled them with dirt and planted. We soon discovered they were going to be hard to water so we added a pvc pipe with holes drilled in it along side the plants so that we could water deep and not erode the dirt, wala irrigation system, so far so good and everyone that sees them love them and so do I!!

Here is the table we made, much the same way, with a log and a top attached makes a perfect place to set a drink without the worry of anything getting messed up! We have really enjoyed it all this summer and hope to be able to do so for years to come....in the neighborhood?? come on by we would love to have you!  That about raps up our summer, what about yours? Have you done anything adventurous or exciting?

Next on the agenda is getting the house decorated for fall, but that is another post, coming soon. I plan to do that this weekend and will share pictures, would love to see yours too!! Till then....have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!!

The Secret is Out!!

Okay the secret is out and if you are reading this you probably have already realized I am NOT a good blogger!! I could never do this to make money as so many are doing now days....so I have admitted it...that's my story and I am sticking to it...BUT...I do enjoy having a place to come and "chat" now and again so here I am....I would love to hear what YOU have been up to this summer, here is my latest adventure:

After I got all my organizing and rearranging done to my satisfaction I decided I needed to relearn to can!! We used to do this all the time when the kids were little as a summer project and I realized I missed doing it, besides I now have an EMPTY shelf in the laundry cupboard that would store canned things perfectly...SOOOOO last week we took a day trip to Fredricksburg Texas to get some of their famous peaches and tomatoes and we Scored!!
I got 1/2 bushel of peaches and enough tomatoes (over riped and CHEAP!) to make 2 gallons of salsa and spaghetti sauce! SEE!!!

We are having our first sampling of it tonight...this is a family recipe that Mike's uncle Sam never wanted to share for years but finally did and it is so
easy to make....promise that will come first of next week AND the secret to putting up peaches that the grower shared with me...until then...have a good weekend and a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY with your family!!

Happy Mother's Day

        Happy Mother's Day!!

I  hope your day is very special! If your Mom is still alive give her a big hug and thank you for all that she has meant to you. If you are lucky enough to have your kids close by cherish the time with them and let them know how proud you are of them. If you have lost your mom or don't have children of your own look around and find someone that needs a friendly phone call or visit that might be feeling lonesome on this day. Hallmark has given us this day but we can make it a blessing to those around so ENJOY!!

Our trip to the Country Living Fair

If you remember I told you that we had plans to go to the Country Living Fair this weekend and we did! My friend Pam and I headed out early Friday morning arriving just a little before they opened and took it all in. I don't think we left a stone unturned or a booth unvisited. It was fun, what I enjoyed the most was running into lots of old customers and visiting with them and seeing what treasures they found....I found a few myself too! I enjoyed the fair but really think that our fall and spring trek to Round Top and Wherrington just as good if not better. One thing that amazed me was how far some of the shoppers had traveled! We visited with one lady that was from Utah and had flown in just for this show!  I was surprised at the number of vendors, really thought there would be more but there were some truly wonderful hand made crafts which I am drawn too...being in retail for so long I am jaded by the "market products" that I saw during my market visits so I zero in on the handmades and antiques which there were plenty to see and admire. The one thing I would have changed was the availability of food and drinks, we stood in line for over an hour for lunch because they only had one place serving food which to us with a crowd like they were expecting should have been better planned but other than that it was a fun day.

Another highlight of our trip was getting to meet K.R. Wood, he was performing in the area of the cafeteria and a delight to see and hear. One of our long time customers and friend Karen Jellison and he travel around and share his talents and love of Texas History. He has an original chuck wagon and all the "fixins" for an original campfire experience complete with cowboy music and folk lore. What a great resource for teachers, scout groups and special occasions! They do this full time and do a great job! You can find more information HERE.  Take a look and see if you could use this great talent in some way, you won't be disappointed.

Carson's new bed

I keep forgetting to share with you the bed that Mike made for Carson. Right before they came for spring break he got into his "big boy" bed at  home so we didn't want him to have to use his crib while they were here, so we came up with this youth bed idea...and I have to say I love the way it turned out! We got a SOLID WOOD door at Home Depot and cut it about 3/4 down to make the head board and the foot board then made the side boards out of 1X12 lumber. Mike added the railing until he gets used to sleeping in it but it can be easily moved. We used the mattress from the crib which was perfect and of course had to add the Toy Story bedding and Woody as a bed mate!! Carson loved it and so do I...what do you think?

Anyone need a really cool spring/summer project to do with your kids?? I have found it! We got a fairy garden delivered to us the other day and started filling it up immediately! Here is a picture of the finished product (for now) we started with just a fairy garden theme and quickly turned into a princess/fairy garden! The kit has the container, dirt, rocks, gazebo and fairy dust , we added the picket fence, lights, larger rocks and some princess / fairy accessories found at our local pet store and our toy stash. You can plant real plants or choose the perfect plastic ones like we did!! Anyway you go it is a wonderful creative project that can change in the blink of an eye or in the imagination of a four year old....I had so much fun I may start my own. We got our starter kit from my friend Suzanne at Second Street Seasonals. I am sure you could order one from her or start your own the ideas are limitless!! Be sure and share with us what you come up with.

Let's do some canning!

Okay so I won't fill a pantry or all my food source won't be out of a canning jar but I would love to be able to can some of the fresh produce available starting in the next week or so...what's on my list you ask?? (aren't you sweet to ask, thanks!) I am thinking salsa, peaches, green beans and maybe some cucumbers. I have found some wonderful ideas and recipes on pintrest and we have our Uncle Sam's not so secret recipe for salsa, that we both love, to start with. Any other suggestions? and for you locals have you heard of this farmers market that is open on Tuesday?? I think that is on our to do list next week....anyone else found a farmers market that you love?? Please share! and watch for those recipes and hints as the summer progresses..as for now happy picking!

Happy Easter!!

Happy Easter everyone, I hope your weekend is full of families fun and great memories. We will have our traditional day, early church, egg hunt and lunch. We are looking forward to it and hoping for a continuation of the beautiful weather we are having. Hubby planted his winter rye grass in the back so that the kids would have a nice soft area to play, it is so hard to keep grass in our yard because of all the trees and draught statis that we are usually in, but this year the rain has been good and it looks lush and green for the big day of hunting eggs, playing kick ball and whack ball (as Carson loves to say!!) Blessing to you and yours and as always if you don't have a church home and would like to join us we would love to have you here is a link to the information times and schedule.....www.bbcfamily.com/

My spring cleaning hint

As you know I have been decluttering my closets, cupboards and cabinets and I must say my biggest find were the leaf bags that you can get at Home Depot!! If I remember right you get 5 or 6 for like $2.99 and they are HUGE!! More important they are strong. I filled up 16 of this dudes with everything from paper records to old linens and towels! They held everything! For the paper records we just added them to the burn pile in the back (which I highly recommend either this or a really good shredder!) and hubby burned them with the brush. The others I just folded over sealed with some good packing tape and put them out for the trash collection. So if you need a good way to clean up I highly recommend these bags....happy cleaning!!

Our treasure hunt is a success!!

Susan and I made the trip to Warrenton Antique Fair today and enjoyed it so much!! The weather was wonderful, we ran into some friends and Homespun customers and everyone seemed to be finding some treasures....I was not left behind. Found a silver tray for my new bathroom redo, some old glass lamps that I am going to have remade into the hanging lights for our new bedroom (whenever it is my turn on the remodel list) a really cute necklace and cute top made from antique lace that I am really thinking hard about becoming my Easter outfit, a cute chick in a wire cage, pottpouri and wooden buckets and some new magnets for my redone kitchen wall....see told you I did good don't you think?? The show goes on through this weekend all next week and through Saturday of the first weekend of April so if you have some time grab a friend, hubby or neighbor and get out there!! The drive is full of bluebonnets and full tanks on the road side which is a glorious site to see after our dry summer...and let me know what you find!

Did you think I got lost?

I can't say I have been doing anything exciting just dove back into my cleaning spree and have been able to get a handle on most of it. I have one more room to do and just a few cabinets to go through then I will be done....well after I get some boxes and pack away the things for our garage sale hopefully next month...the good news is I have lots of empty shelves and closets just in time for THE ROUND TOP ANTIQUE FAIR!!! Susan and I traditionally go to the Werrington show the week before but have not been able to do so the last couple of years so we are making a solid date for Thursday to head that way. If you have never been you are missing alot of fun, great food and lots of hidden treasures!! Here is a link to the Round Top show...it starts the first weekend in April..do you think I could talk hubby into going back with me then??? hummmm

The end of spring break

Spring break is over and we are spending today getting back on target. Cleaning house, putting up gutters on the back of the house hopefully before the rains hit again and getting prepared for our week. With each marble that I find out of place and block that is uncovered hiding under the coffee table I have to smile at the fun we had this past week. It was filled with showing Carson his big boy bed that "Da" made. Any time Peyton gets to spend the day and night with us it is always full of giggles and fun. They had fun learning how to shuck an oyster and even tried one (their faces were priceless!!) But the tradition we look forward to the most is the Rodeo!! They ride the ponies, feed and pet the animals, ride the rides and most of all get to eat the coolest things...like pizza on a stick!! We all decided next year we would try going to the night time rodeo and see all the races and bull riding...they were all for that. I hope you guys had as nice a spring break at your house, I would love to hear what went on...now it is on to planning for Easter and the Easter bunny...I love being a kid again how about you?

Weekend project...magnetize!!

For those of you who know me you know I don't like clutter of any kind. I like things orderly, neat and in it's place, displayed and not "stuck". It really kept me hopping at the shop because of course when people look, feel and buy out of a display it MUST be redone to look good again, at least to my eye. So that led me to this weekends project....CLEANING OFF MY REFRIGERATOR! I love all the pictures art work etc just not there...so here was my solution...

I had seen this product used on TV and remembered they made a wall magnetized so I had to try it. I put it on hubby's Home Depot list, he found it easily and so my project was off to a good start.

First we used blue tape to mask off the area of the wall we wanted our magnet board. Then we put three to four thin layers of the magnet paint on the wall. We sanded the wall a little before painting because our wall had a satin paint on it so we wanted to have a good surface. Each coat takes about 30 minutes to dry so it doesn't take long. Hint...if you will wrap your roller in a plastic grocery bag between coats you don't have to clean it and it will stay wet between coatsThe instructions suggest no more than two coats of top coat should go on top of the magnetic paint so we used Kilnz for our first coat since our walls are so light in color I was afraid it wouldn't cover the black of the magnetic paint. This may have been a mistake I think it blocked a little too much but it still worked out okay, but I would not do it this way again.....just sayin'The last step was to paint with the wall color paint and then put the trim up that Hubby had painted for me to frame it out...so what do you think? Much better than a messy fridge door
and a lot more room for our budding artist!!

and you know I couldn't stop there, with the left over paint I did a small closet door in the kids room, now they have a special place for their art work in progress. Hint #2 the magnetic paint is hard to clean up so cover things and if you are messy like I am..nail polish remover will take it off your hands, I am still working on the sleeve of my shirt!! Happy painting!

Let's decorate some eggs!!

Don't you love these eggs!! I can see them in a rustic bowl with some moss or natural straw or surrounding a candle or bunny in a centerpiece. You could even attach a ribbon or raffia and tie them to a tree branch that you have trimmed the ideas are endless. I think with extra time on my hands this year I might try decorating some eggs...if you like the look of these you can find the directions HERE or is this more your style?? Don't you love the tea dyed colored eggs along with the blue?? The are easy to do too....you can find those HERE Do you have any other ideas or easy way to make our eggs extra special this year? Let me know and HAPPY DECORATING!!

Rainy Days are coming..Need something fun?

If you need something fun to do during the next few rainy days I highly recommend the movie The Lorax. It is adorable, lots of bright colors, dancing singing and fun characters, but what else would you expect from Dr Seuss. I will admit I had never read this book but was totally mesmerized by the story and found myself singing the songs all afternoon long. So take in a matinee and save room in your diet plan for popcorn you will be glad you did!

A good day for an Adventure

Lots of fun today, Susan and I ventured out for the first time together since we closed the shop. We were both going through a little withdrawal and I have not been able to drive my car all month cause hubby likes that job so I really felt liberated!! We decided to eat lunch HERE, what a fun place. It was like going back in time to an old soda fountain diner, the parking was a little tricky but well worth the trip and while we were on 38th we decided to visit Sweet Charity. I had never been to this gift shop sponsored by Seton Hospital but Susan had told me about it and what cute unusual things that had and she was right! They had alot of the things that we saw and recognized but also lots of different things too....I really
liked the children's area....Mike had been looking for
a set of marbles and they had one with a cute draw
string bag to hold them and I got an Old Maid card
game for the kids to play!! I used to love to play this
when I was little, hope they do too. Next we went
to Tipler Antique Lamp Shop. Mike told me about this several months ago...Oh my they have some wonderful lights and lamps, and they will custom make lamps for you too! I am still looking for
what I want to put in our bedroom and I think now I
will be able to find or design the perfect one, I will keep you posted, but if you are interested you can
find them HERE another great locally owned small
business that appreciates our support and such nice helpful people to boot!

Perfect Day for Flying a Kite

If you have never experienced the Zilker Park
Kite festival you really need to. We have been in Austin almost 35 years and this is the first time we have ventured out and it is amazing! You can't imagine all the kites from big and fancy to the smallest ones that can be held in the palm of your hand!!
We started out at Burger Center thinking we would catch the shuttle and found out the wait in line was at 1 hour...no way with a four year old in tow, so we got brave and decided we would to try to find a parking place down by the park. Shannon dropped us off at one of the paths and went to park to meet up with us down the walk. It took us probably 30 minutes or so to finally get to the soccer fields where there were millions (well maybe not millions but ALOT of people and kites) We found an empty space for our quilt, guys went of too get us some must have kettle corn and strawberry lemonade and we laid back and took it all in! SO much fun!! We then hiked over to the play scape and found out we could cut through the pool area and cut about 20 minutes off our walk back to the car.... which by that time was a blessing for sure....what a fun afternoon!! so if you get the chance mark your calendar for next spring and venture out...hey we might run into you there and share a blanket!

March 1st !!!

March 1st can you believe it?? Where was our winter?? We have had 80-90 degrees most days most didn't even feel like that much of a break from summer except those temps were in the 110's and we have had some wonderful rain, but I miss the cold cold days and nights when soups and stews simmer all day and make the house smell yummy...so since this might be our last chance I fixed chili today and I must say I LOVE this recipe! I got it off my new favorite place Pintrest and this is the second time I have made it. It is so easy and lots of flavor good in a bowl with cornbread or crackers or our favorite as a frito pie, but anyway you have it I think you will like it...and let's give credit where it is due this recipe was "pinned" from HERE, which is a great place to bookmark she has great recipes!!
1 lb ground beef - browned
2 16oz cans of Bush's Chili Beans ( I used one)
1 14.5 can beef broth
1 can rotel tomatoes
2 tsp minced onions
1 garlic clove
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 cup ketchup

Pour it all into a crock pot and cook on low for 4 hours. When serving top with cheese and green onions if you want. Enjoy!!

Another thing I am trying since I am trying to get back into fighting shape (or at least in to my summer jeans!) Is Sassy Water...but more about that tomorrow.

February 29th

Sadie Hawkins Day, Leap Year, whatever you call this day it has a history, do you know why it takes place every four years?

From my friend Sherry at the Red Raven:
Today is an "ephemeral ghost". It marks a "leap" in time, when the calendar is adjusted to make up for extra seconds accumulated over the preceding three years due to the rotation of the earth. Have fun and enjoy the day !!!

I remember in High School we always had a Sadie Hawkins Dance where the girls invited the boys..after all turn about it fair play...let them sit by the phone and sweat that call..right?? Well I took full advantage of this day and asked one Mr. Mike Dorsey to that dance my junior year and like they say the rest is history!!

What ever this day means to you I hope it is a good one, and thank goodness it is not my Birthday!! However come to think about it I would be a lot younger!!

Item number 2 - get in shape

The next thing on my "retired list" after getting organized was to get back to eating right ( I use Weight Watchers online, LOVE IT!! and it is easy for me to use and get results!) and to.... hold on to your hats....EXERCISE!!! Now mind you every time I went to the doctor and he asked me how active I was I said...are you kidding I work retail! lots of lifting unpacking climbing ladders etc....and he let me get by with that for "being active" well no more so we joined the Y. We went today for our first session with a personal trainer that worked up a program for us, showed us how to use the machines, added the proper weights took notes then after working out on all of the machines.... left us to ride the bicycles for 15 more minutes!!! Brutal!! But all in all I will say I enjoyed it! I am not sore (YET) and am actually looking forward to Thursday...hopefully I will feel the same way when Thursday rolls around but for now...the Y and Tim get two thumbs up from us!

Let's get Organized!

Well it is Monday and from what I remember about growing up you always start a new project on Monday, whether it be an actual project, diet, new way of thinking, what ever it always seem to just feel right to start it on a Monday...so no more excuses I am tackling this closet THIS Monday. I have never liked the way this door works it just seems like so much wasted space to the left and right behind the section of wall and besides twisting into a noodle and reaching into the back corner does not bode well with me anymore....so solution?? have hubby open the doorway up all the way to the corner, replace the "header" (top of door opening) and put on new doors...simple right? He didn't argue so I am going forward with my plan....if you don't hear from me in a while please come check the back left hand side to make sure I survived!! In the meantime here is a link to a great organizing tool I found online, now don't get me wrong I haven't completely sat down and followed all the suggestions but I found lots of her suggestions good...just sayin' it's Monday! Click HERE if you want to take a look.

As many of you know I plan to "redo" each room at home one room at a time...I skipped a few steps in our front bedroom so I will have to revisit it later but for now it is better than it was...we had an over sized sleigh bed in here that drove me crazy..too big...not my style...and too hard to make up. When Mike said he HAD to keep these two pictures from his office I couldn't imagine WHERE in my house I would put a picture of a fisherman and a wharf of all things!!
But he doesn't ask for much in the way of decorating so I came up with this idea...IF he would help me take down that sleigh bed and bring back my antique bed I would make his pictures work in this room...so this is what we came up with. I will come back and clean out the closet, repaint probably in a lighter color but for now I am enjoying the "update"...what do you think?

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Ah retirement!! We have been "at home" now almost three weeks and this is the first day I have had to myself...and what am I doing?? laundry!! Don't get me wrong I love spending time with Mike and our new puppy Cooper but after all these years of doing what I want when I want during my days it is an adjustment...the highlight?? the fact that Mike has started making the bed each morning!! It is the little things that count I know and I love it! It makes me feel like I am in a hotel each and every time I walk in our room and the bed has been made!

My other new favorite thing is Pintrest....have you tried it yet? Love love love it! I will admit most of the things I am "pinning" are new recipes but again...if you are going to have to cook you might as well make it fun and interesting! I will be sharing lots of things in the future that I am finding from recipes that I try to decorating ideas but for now if you want to "follow me" HERE is the link to my pintrest board and I look forward to seeing what you find too!
See you soon

MUSINGS??? Really??? What is a musing you ask...well the best I can tell it is a very old word for thoughts, meditation, and the sharing of knowledge, besides it just sounds cool!! So that is the name I came up with for our new blog. Now you ask WHY??? well after lots of emails, face book postings and discussions I have been asked and asked again to have some way after the closing the shop that we could share different things and a blog is a wonderful tool for doing just that. So here we go with the first posting. I hope as we go forward you will share with us and share us with your friends so they can help out with this adventure too....so come on aboard and be a part of our musings!

First order of business...please share any of your favorite blogs, websites or face book pages that promote a small business that you love...lets start a list and support these guys all that we can...ready set....share in the comments below....
